Hi mommies! I'm back with another kwento. I recently read this article about obesity as an issue in nutrition for children, and how it's becoming a serious problem that's on the rise – especially among countries that face challenges in meeting kids' nutrition needs. It's been a cause for concern and in fact, maraming environmental groups (mostly parents themselves) ang nagbibigay ng full support nila sa government drive for healthier foods that provide the nutrients found in the food pyramid.
Obesity is no joke talaga kasi it can lead to a lot of serious health problems in the future. Nobody's immune to sickness sabi nga nila. Kahit bata ka man or matanda, it's important that you maintain a healthy weight. Para naman sa mga growing kids tulad ni Yohan, it becomes very important to support good nutrition for children through healthy food made available at home and in school.
Well as a mom, it's definitely a great concern for me that my kids live a healthy lifestyle. Whatever I know right now, I learned from my own mom. I'd like to share with you some healthy eating habits that my mom had instilled in me. Sana katulad ko, you can also try to teach it to your own kids so we can all do our share in promoting proper nutrition for children these days.
Alam ko, mommies, minsan talaga nakaka-intimidate kapag pinag-uusapan na ang mga scientific terms like essential nutrients or the food pyramid pero hindi tayo dapat ma-overwhelm sa ganitong mga bagay. Don't worry because like me, you can also start with the little things! Read on for more easy tips you can try doing at home:
Clean out the cupboards of junk foods.
I remember when I was a kid, pag nagbubukas ako ng mga cupboard namin sa kitchen, wala ka makikitang mga unhealthy stuff like cookies, chips, candy, sugary cereals, kahit soda, wala. Ang logic behind this sabi ni Mommy, kapag hindi nakikita ng mga bata ang mga junk food na 'to, they are less likely to ask for them. Out of sight, out of mind ika-nga. Kaya mas nagiging madaling i-curb ang cravings for junk food at mas nakakapag-focus tayong mga mommies in promoting proper nutrition for children. But of course occasionally, like my mom used to do with me, I let Yohan eat junk food like sa mga birthday parties. Moderation is key.
Keep offering new types of food.
Si Yohan is a picky eater. My mom's advice to me? Just keep on offering her new types of food to try. Variety in serving everyday meals is very important in ensuring kids get the right set of healthy foods based on the food pyramid. If she doesn't like it now, she might learn to like it a little later. Sabi niya nga sakin, dati daw, nung first time niya ko pinatry ng ampalaya, sobrang inayawan ko raw talaga. I didn't even bother to finish eating it. But she just kept on trying to make me eat it, paiba-iba ng luto until such time na nadiscover niya that I love eating ampalaya with scrambled egg. Mom said, for kids, no doesn't always mean no. It can mean not now and try again later.
Give your kid the freedom to choose his/her meal.
Now that Yohan is older, I try to involve her na rin sa pagpili ng food that she wants to eat so we can both find new sources of essential nutrients that provide good nutrition for children her age. Every weekend, I share with her some food magazines tapos I ask her which food she thinks I should cook for dinner. We also experiment with dessert recipes which need milk – dito namin nagagamit ang favorite niyang Lactum as an ingredient. Minsan naman I let Yohan decide what we'll have for merienda using the picture of a food pyramid I posted on the refrigerator. Yohan really loves it when she gets a say sa kakainin namin. Mas nae-excite sya sa meal time!
Don't use food for rewards or as a show of love.
Nung bata pa ko, kapag I do well sa lessons ko or when I learned to fix my bed after sleeping in it, ang ginagawa ni mommy she will always plant a big kiss on my cheek tapos sasabihin niya sakin, good job anak! She never made promises to me na pag ginawa ko ang isang bagay, we will eat out at my favorite fast food place or she will cook me my favorite food. When I first became a mom, she gave me that tip too. Sabi niya sakin, "Ann, kapag ginamit mo ang food as a reward sa anak mo when she does something good, it can lead to an unhealthy relationship with food, baka magovereat sila later on. Avoid serving food when what you really meant to serve is love. So ako, I just shower my kids with a lot of hugs and kisses! That's more valuable 'di ba?
Through the years of being a mom, may mga discoveries din ako of my own. Katulad ng Lactum 3+/6+! Until now, Lactum 6+ together with three balanced meals a day help provide Yohan all the essential nutrients she needs to support proper nutrition for children her age. With Lactum, 100% panatag ang kalooban ko that she is properly nourished with all the essential nutrients found in the food pyramid.
Thanks Mom for all the healthy habits na tinuro mo sakin! I know I'm a better mom because of you.
