While it is always good to experiment with a wide variety of food for our children to widen their palate and get them accustomed to having more than one or two kinds of dishes, there are times when they prefer having something easy to digest. When this happens, we can give their stomachs a break by serving meals that make use of these ingredients:
1. Carbohydrates- Rice, bread and potatoes are easy for even kids' digestive systems to handle, and have a neutral taste that is usually readily accepted.
2. Fruit- Melons, bananas and other non-citrus fruit are easy on the stomach and do not give a strong flavor that kids might not want.
3. Vegetables- Carrots, bean sprouts, mushrooms and pechay are good examples of vegetables that are not difficult to digest and can be added to almost any dish.
4. Protein- Scrambled eggs and tofu are a good source of protein for kids and can easily be digested. Tofu, in particular, has a mild flavor that allows you to season it as much (or little) as you'd like.
Even when selecting easy-to-digest ingredients and dishes for your child, it is important to follow nutritional guidelines for proper nutrition for your child. For easy reference, check out the Food Pyramid here.
